Our son attends a small school here in the Tetons. Just about 100 kids from K-8. About 30 of those kiddos showed up yesterday for a Bicycle School Bus to celebrate National Bike To School Day. We were so excited to have so many kids participate! Next year we will shoot for 50% of the school...including the teachers:)
The idea behind a biking school bus is pretty simple, but does take some coordination.
Biking school buses are when groups of kids ride along predetermined routes to school under adult supervision. Some pick up kids along the way just like a bus, while others have a central meeting point from which everyone rides together. We decided to meet up at our local bike park before heading out! For some neighborhoods it’s a casual ride, whereas others set up a formal plan with adults scheduled to ride on certain days.
We used some of the 7th and 8th graders to help ride in with some of the little's. It was awesome! If you are comfortable with some older kids in the neighborhood you could always enlist them to help coordinate a bicycle school bus! The older kids love the opportunity and the little kids...well, just simply love older kids:)
It is widely known that physical activity and exercise before class can boost learning and memory in children. Studies also show that when children get physical activity before class, they are more on task and fidget less. This is something we can relate to for sure...and our child's teacher:)
We challenge all of you to start a bicycle school bus in your neighborhood and see how many days you can ride between now and the end of school!
Let us know how it goes:)
